The history of Rocca di Arona

The Rocca di Arona has ancient origins and for centuries was one of the most important fortifications on Lake Maggiore.

Already in medieval times, the promontory on which it stands was considered a strategic point for controlling lake traffic and trade routes between Piedmont and Lombardy. Over the centuries, the Rocca was expanded and fortified, becoming a true defensive system.

The site is closely linked to the Borromeo family. Saint Charles Borromeo was born here in 1538, one of the most important religious figures in Italian history.

The fortress maintained its military role until the early nineteenth century, when, during the Napoleonic era, it was largely demolished. From that moment on, the Rocca lost its defensive function and gradually transformed into the green area we can visit today.

What remains today is not an intact castle, but a place rich in history, where the landscape and the few surviving structures tell the strategic and military past of Arona.
